Feb 11, 2021

Toronto: Hungry Eyes Media is excited to announce the premiere of Award-winning filmmaker Jennifer Holness’ timely and provocative feature documentary Subjects of Desire at SXSW on Wednesday March 17, 2021 at 10:00am

Subjects of Desire is Jennifer Holness’ feature directorial debut and was inspired by conversations with her 3 teenage daughters. The film delves into the world of the Miss Black America Pageant and 4 of their contestants as well as showcasing interesting culturally impactful voices. Subjects of Desire offers a comprehensive look at why Black women’s beauty is being appropriated today even Black women themselves are not always centered in the narrative of their own creation.

“We rarely talk seriously about the privilege beauty bestows, yet we know that it is a powerful tool. But, if we acknowledge its power, we must also acknowledge that denying the beauty of Black women is not a passive act. Ironically, as North America beauty standards begin to change, it’s important that we understand the forces that historically defined Black female beauty and why they have been invested in maintaining those norms.”
