Subjects of Desire makes TIFF’s Canada’s Top 10 Films List 2021
Canada’s Top Ten celebrates its 20th anniversary this year. TIFF has called Jennifer Holness’s film, “an insightful and much-needed documentary about the stereotypes projected onto Black women.”
Over the years, Top Ten has mounted cross-country tours and hosted onstage conversations, musical performances, and art installations. But one thing has remained consistent: each year’s lists have showcased the incredible wealth of talent in the Canadian film industry, spanning the entire country, spotlighting work in every genre, and honouring a diverse group of filmmakers.
Jennifer was thrilled when she got the news that her first feature documentary that she directed made the list. “Making TIFF’s TOP 10 on my first feature doc @subjectsofdesiredoc is pretty amazing! I’m like DANG! I did it,” she wrote on her Instagram and Twitter account.
“Canada continues to generate great new film talent and we’re happy to share some of the best in Canada’s Top 10 this year,” said Cameron Bailey, CEO of TIFF. “Since the first year of 2001, there have been so many first appearances in the selection of feature films. Some of these films were premiered worldwide during the festival and are now debuting at international festival circuits. This is remarkable for the first director. I couldn’t be proud.”
