BLK Survival Saga
BLK Survival Saga brings together fictionalized characters and real life historical situations, taking users on a page turning, thrilling adventure ride. Users get a front row seat into interactive narrative stories where they help the protagonist, typically a young Black kid in their teens, make decisions, overcome significant challenges and ultimately change their lives for the better.
Vol. I, Coffey’s Epic Journey, follows 14-year-old Coffey as he escapes from slavery in North Carolina in order to fight in the American Revolutionary War and gain his freedom. Fighting with John Grave Simcoe’s Queen Rangers in Boston, Coffey eventually joins an all Black Regiment who had a significant impact on the war effort. When the British lose the war, Coffey is granted his freedom, signing his name in the Book of Negroes. He becomes one of 30,000 Loyalists soldiers given passage to Nova Scotia. Leaving his beloved younger sister Junie behind, he is determined to find a way to reunite with her in his new home country. As Coffey builds a new life in the expanding city of Halifax, we closely model his experiences to those of Black settlers during a time when freedom was elusive. Coffey overcomes many challenges and ultimately his story is one of triumph that will intrigue tech savvy young readers.
Vol. II, Miriam goes West, is set in British Columbia and follows the thrilling escapades of Miriam Brown, a 12 year-old Black girl whose father purchases her freedom at the expense of his own. Miriam travels with a young couple, Pastor Robert Miller and his young wife, Sadie. The journey involves 4 months by wagon train from Missouri to California and then by steam ship to Vancouver Island where they join 800 others in a growing community that is 50% Black. Following the call sent out by Premier James Douglas inviting Blacks to settle in Vancouver Island Miriam proves to be a formidable pioneer with talents as an animal whisper and mid-wife. At first things seem to be going well, but as more European settlers arrive, things get tense. At 19, Miriam marries and follows her husband to Salt Spring Island and then settles in Hogan’sAlley, Vancouver, leaving her children a legacy that few Canadians can match.
